Take the middleman out of your online presence with We Can Do That!

The key to truly owning your presence online is having full control of your domain(s), your web site hosting , your email, and your content.

The logic behind choosing GoDaddy as our primary vendor for domains and hosting is simple: GoDaddy is not only simple and inexpensive, but they are reliable. Web hosting and domain registration companies come and go every day and you can seldom tell from their online presence just how deep their brick and mortar presence is or how reliable their infrastructure is.

    Web 101

Let’s step back and review some fundamentals to ensure we’re all on the same page.

Domain: Your domain is a  method of giving your website (and email) a human-friendly address on the Internet so we don’t have to remember IP addresses like 68.102.65.102.

DNS: Domain Name Service translates the Domain names to IP addresses. By manipulating DNS, web sites, email and subdomains  (test.yourdomain.com, where test is the subdomain) can be directed to one or more destinations online to handle those services.

Web Hosting: Your site requires a reliable, publicly reachable storage and web publication engine.

It is entirely possible to have these services split out among different service providers. Typically, the domain registrar (GoDaddy)  used to first register a domain will also handle the DNS for that domain. It’s possible to forward DNS to different name servers, but the less moving parts a client has to manage, the better.

    Acquiring a Domain

Choosing the right domain name(s) is important. Keep in mind the following recommendations while choosing a domain name:

    • Do not infringe on established intellectual property names
    • Shorter is always better
    • Avoid the use of hyphens as visitors often forget them or put them in the wrong places
    • A .com top level domain (TLD) is best for business, but may not be available: if this is the case, buying a different top level domain like .net, .biz or .info is advised only if the established .com is not in the same vertical market

GoDaddy’s domain search tool will also provide alternative suggestions for both the domain and the TLD should your desired domain be unavailable.

    Buying a Domain

The purchase process is simple but requires registration and the entry of personal information. This is a requirement by ICANN, the international body which regulates domain names and Internet standards.

Clients may choose to keep all domain registration information option, at an extra charge, which hides contact information from the WHOIS database. This is optional.

    Adding Hosting & Email

During the domain check out process, you will be offered additional products and services, including hosting and email service. Part of establishing a professional web presence is having email accounts which match the website domain. Having to use an AOL.com email account for your business is obviously not desired, so this add-on service is recommended.

In most cases, GoDaddy’s Economy hosting will serve most purposes, but the upgraded accounts are an inexpensive upgrade.

    Next Steps

Once the order is finalized, the GoDaddy account will have a hosting “credit” that can be used to continue setting up hosting. This step is commonly performed by We Can Do That! during the implementation.

To get started on the implementation, We Can Do That! will need you to add us to your account as an AccountExec.

Inviting us as an AccountExec will give us the permissions to do the necessary work while still keeping you in control of you account. Once you receive email notification that We Can Do That! has accepted the AccountExec invitation, enable permissions to enable us to get to work for you!
